Our Communities

Each year, employees spend

THOUSANDS OF HOURS

serving their communities.

Action Aligned
with Our Mission

All of the community engagement efforts we support are chosen based on their alignment with our mission. From environmental cleanups to racing for a cause, every activity furthers our mission impact.

Spend by
Mission Impact Goal

Over the last five years, we have contributed nearly $900,000 to employee-led volunteer initiatives and direct charitable contributions that advance our five Mission Impact Goals.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

Our employees are improving the quality of life in their communities in many ways.

Here are just some examples:

Tutoring students at Harmony Hills Elementary school in Aspen Hill, MD, where many students speak English as a second language, and providing translation assistance during parent-teacher conferences.

Clearing invasive species during the semi-annual clean-up of Fresh Pond Reservoir in Cambridge.

Taking part in the annual point-in-time count of people experiencing homelessness through Bethesda Cares - a program seeking to reduce and prevent homelessness.

Organizing fundraisers for the Lik Lik Skul Foundation to build classrooms in Papua New Guinea and assisting with construction

Preparing meals at Shepherd's Table, a resource center for people experiencing homelessness in Silver Spring, MD.

"Power Lunching" with students who need extra support with reading through Boston Partners in Education. One in ten Abt Cambridge employees is a Power Lunch volunteer.

Mobilizing the Maryland community for the point-in-time count of people experiencing homelessness

Our Interns and intern coordinators helping cleanup the Capital Crescent Trail

Preparing meals at a community resource center for the homeless

During a recent interview, a prospective candidate asked me what makes Abt unique. I responded that Abt is committed to its neighboring communities and told her about Power Lunch, a volunteer program we participate in in Cambridge. Volunteers from nearby companies are matched to students in need of extra support with reading, and you meet every week for an hour. I've been working with my student for two years. She's really gained confidence in her reading abilities and has expressed her appreciation for having one-on-one sessions with a mentor who's invested in her academics and overall well-being. Both she and I look forward to our weekly sessions!

As a visitor to Papua New Guinea it is terrific to be able to give back to the country through providing classrooms for a small group of young children. I firmly believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn and potentially create generational improvements in their communities. With like-minded friends we are able to make a small contribution.

Disaster Relief & Employee Matching

Over the past year, we matched employee contributions and made company donations to multiple disaster relief efforts, including to the Brighter Tomorrow for Africa Foundation after devastating mudslides in Sierra Leone, and the Anti-Defamation League to combat bigotry and violence after the violence in Charlottesville, Va.

Helping Children in Need

Whether it's supplies for back-to-school or holiday toy drives, our staff are extraordinarily generous.
Organizations we’ve donated to include:

Cradles2Crayons

Toys for Tots

Linkages to Learning

Ronald McDonald House

Backpack Buddies

Diaper Bank of NC

Embrace

Blue Sky Bridge

Blood Drives

Our employees regularly respond to calls for blood, and Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge has recognized Abt with the Blood Drop Community Service award for the company's commitment to the blood donor program.

We have a strong culture of community support through athleticism...

Sponsoring an Abt team in the Race for Every Child, an annual 5K run that began in 2013 to benefit Children's National Medical Center, specialized medical care and research into childhood diseases, in Washington, D.C.

Financially supporting walking teams to raise money for AIDS Action in Boston, which advocates for HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment. Abt has sponsored the event for over 20 years!

Taking part in the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge race, which supports the Every Child Fund at Boston Children's Hospital.

Supporting Fisher House Foundation, best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans' families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment through our participation in the annual Fisher House Golf Classic.

Kickstarting Careers

We were an early partner with Year Up, a training program that bridges the opportunity divide for young adults, and hired a number of graduates over the years.

Today we're piloting a high school internship program through Urban Alliance, which matches under-resourced high schoolers with companies to gain work experience.

Abternship

College students and recent grads with an interest in furthering Abt's mission join us each summer for an Abternship. "Abterns" gain valuable work experience on substantive projects in their fields working side-by-side with our experts, and many have gone on to start their careers here.
